"Chord" Notations

Use Chordly's chord layer for musical notations such as key changes, repeats, cues, and dynamics, not just chord names.

In Chordly, the chord layer is not limited to plain chord symbols. You can also use it as a notation layer above the lyrics.

That is useful for things like:

  • key changes
  • repeats
  • dynamics
  • arrangement cues
  • short performance notes

How to add a notation marker

Use the same flow you would use for a normal chord:

Place your cursor where the notation should appear.

Press Cmd+K / Ctrl+K to open the chord editing menu.

Type the marker you want, such as N.C., x2, rit., or a short key-change note.

Format it so it stands apart from normal chords if needed.

Insert it above the lyric line.

What you can do with it

Because notation markers use the same chord layer as chords, they stay where you put them and can be styled independently from the lyric text.

That gives you a lot of flexibility:

  • use one color for real chords and another for cues
  • add a background to section-level markers
  • increase the size of an important change
  • underline or bold specific performance notes

One important limitation

Transposition only affects entries that Chordly can read as standard chord symbols. If you use the chord layer for notation text, those entries stay exactly as written.

This is often what you want. A marker like x2 or rit. should not change just because the song is transposed.
