What Is Tap Tempo?

Tap tempo is a method of determining the BPM (beats per minute) of a song by tapping along to the beat. Rather than calculating manually, you simply tap a button in time with the music — the tool measures the time between taps and computes the average BPM. Tap tempo is used by musicians, DJs, producers, and music educators to quickly identify or communicate a song's tempo without needing a metronome or audio analysis software.

What Is BPM?

BPM (beats per minute) is the standard measurement of musical tempo. A song at 120 BPM has two beats every second. Slow ballads are typically 60–80 BPM; pop and rock songs are usually 100–140 BPM; uptempo dance music can reach 160–180 BPM or higher. Knowing the BPM of a song is useful for setting a metronome, programming a drum machine, matching loops in a DAW, or syncing effects like delay pedals to the beat.

How to Use This BPM Calculator

Play the song and tap the large button (or press the spacebar) to the beat, once per beat rather than once per bar. After 4–8 taps the reading will stabilize. The tool uses a rolling average of your recent taps, so it's more accurate than measuring a single interval. If you tap in the wrong rhythm or want to start over, click Reset or simply stop tapping. The tool resets automatically after 3 seconds of inactivity. Once you have the tempo, you can use our song key finder to identify the key and get the full picture of a song before you start playing.
